Weir awarded multi-million pound South Korean valve contracts

Weir Valves & Controls UK Ltd, part of the Weir Power & Industrial Division of The Weir Group PLC, is pleased to announce that it has signed two contracts worth in excess of £25m for the design, manufacture and supply of control valves in South Korea.

The contracts come at a time when South Korea is not only pushing ahead with its domestic nuclear power program, but also positioning itself to be a major global manufacturer of nuclear power plants; the company has signed a deal with Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co Ltd to deliver over 100 control valves for safety related and severe service applications at Shin Ulchin, a South Korean nuclear plant currently under construction. It has also signed a contract with Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) for South Korea’s first overseas nuclear contract, to be built at the Braka nuclear power plant in the United Arab Emirates.

Weir has been active in the South Korean market for over 20 years, supplying control valves to both conventional and nuclear power sectors. In 2001 the company entered into an agreement with a local partner to produce Weir valves under license. In 2011 the company acquired the majority share in a local South Korean manufacturing facility it had partnered with for over 20 years and renamed it Weir International.

The Weir International facility is ideally positioned to support plans to further expand into new markets with the South Koreans, as they pursue their ambition to become a major participant in the global new nuclear power plant programme.

Mr Roger Griffin, managing director at Weir Control & Choke Valves said:
“It’s essential to have localised manufacturing in South Korea to become a significant player in the market. Our local presence has enabled us to work on many large projects over the years, supplying a combination of Korean and UK manufactured valves.”

Due to the nature of the applications, the valves for the latest South Korean contracts will be manufactured at Weir’s UK valve facility in Elland, as they require full nuclear qualification in accordance with ASME QME-1 (2000) requirements. The projects will secure sustained manufacturing activity as delivery is phased from 2013 to 2017.

Mr Griffin explained:
“The valves will undergo an extensive programme of qualification testing to ensure they fully meet design requirements. Actuators and instrumentation are also required to comply with the relevant standards for safety-related equipment.”

In addition to the success in winning contracts in South Korea the company has, over the last 18 months, secured significant balance of plant control valve orders for the Chinese nuclear new build programme.

Mr Griffin added:
“Since January 2010, we have invested significantly in the development and growth of our control valve business. Our international success has been underpinned by the experience and reputation of our UK facilities. After all, experience is one of the most important assets a supplier can bring to the table.”

Weir has a proud history of supplying quality valves to a wide range of industries from its Elland and previously Huddersfield facility. Weir Valves & Controls UK Ltd employs around 200 people and these deals are set to generate a significant number of jobs around West Yorkshire. Over the past 40 years this expertise has enabled it to build a strong presence in the nuclear energy market; a presence that continues to grow with the company’s participation in large global projects. The company’s global footprint covers over 70 countries, with more than 14,000 employees.

Free CPD seminars throughout the summer

Due to the success of its spring CPD seminars EMSc (UK) Ltd, manufacturer of the Star® range of energy saving solutions – including the UK’s leading voltage optimisation system Powerstar – has announced a summer line-up of free energy efficiency events. The company is inviting businesses that are keen to learn more about how they can reduce their operating costs and improve their overall energy efficiency to attend.

The company’s series of spring seminars attracted more than 250 people from a range of industries and its upcoming seminars – which will take place in Glasgow, Edinburgh, the West Midlands, Wales and Yorkshire – promise to be even more popular.

Commenting on the seminars, Dr Alex Mardapittas, EMSc (UK) Ltd managing director said:
“As part of our drive to increase awareness and education around voltage optimisation, we have successfully delivered a range of CPD seminars over the spring period. We will continue to deliver these seminars, which are aimed at informing businesses on how they can benefit from voltage optimisation and the guaranteed cost savings the technology offers, throughout May, June and July.”

Voltage optimisation is a simple, cost-efficient way to control a building’s incoming voltage in order to maximise energy savings and Powerstar is recognised as being the most efficient voltage optimisation solution in the world – it can save up to 26.1% of total electricity consumption and related CO2 emissions without compromising the supply to electrical equipment.

Dr Mardapittas added:
“Our seminars serve as a great platform for demonstrating voltage optimisation as a credible energy efficiency technology, and have clearly left an impression as not only have we received positive feedback from numerous attendees, but we have also seen an upsurge in enquiries.”

Recorded feedback from spring seminar attendees included comments like
“good mix of information on both commercial and domestic units” and “EMSc (UK) Ltd made a dry, boring subject interesting and easy to follow”.

One lucky attendee won a £25 Amazon gift voucher by providing event feedback. Summer seminar delegates also stand the chance to win a prize when completing the feedback forms provided at the upcoming events.

All seminars are free to attend, will take place from 9:30 am until 1.00 pm, and will include a buffet lunch and networking opportunities. Attendees will be awarded with training certificates and self-assessment forms on completion of the event.

Bookings can be made via www.powerstar.co.uk, by calling 01709 836200, or by emailing tracy.eaton@ems-uk.org

About Powerstar

Powerstar:

Can save an average of 12-15% (up to 26.1% savings recorded) of electricity consumption.

Is fully designed and manufactured in the UK. All Powerstar components, including even minor items such as the paint, are sourced from UK manufacturers. The Powerstar design and any associated software are designed by EMSc UK Limited.

Requires no maintenance and has a 15 year warranty.

Comes with guaranteed savings.

Will improve the life expectancy of electrical equipment.

Will improve the power quality (reduce harmonics and improve the power factor).

Has the highest efficiency and provides better savings than any other voltage optimisation system sold in the UK (on the same load and same voltage reduction).

This has been proven in independent tests by the electricity supplier RWE npower.

RWE npower commented: We did a trial with Powerstar and one other supplier. Powerstar showed a larger overall saving compared to the other supplier. In addition, it improved the power quality more. Powerstar was the better system in all aspects, including the technical design and capabilities.
